Meet Jasmine from @singprettyreadbooks

Is there a special meaning behind your username?

My Bookstagram handle is basically a dedication to two things I'm good at and love to do--sing pretty and read books! I have been a singer my whole life and majored in Music Education. I wasn't exactly a voracious reader growing up, so I re-discovered a passion for reading when I picked up a job at my local library in the youth services department after graduating with my Bachelor's degree. I still sing as much as I can (mostly for church, funerals, and weddings), but I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in librarianship. So, I'm on my way to becoming a singing librarian!

Why do you love books?

There are so many thoughtful, silly, and valid reasons for loving books. I love books because they serve a multitude of purposes--it all depends on the reader. Books are for learning, discovering, teaching, empathizing, and escaping. Books are capable of providing so much in the way of comfort, solace, inspiration, and hope. Now accessible in a variety of formats, books can be consumed and digested anywhere and everywhere, by anyone and everyone. I love books because they are for everyone who wants them.

If someone turned your life into a book, what author would you want to write it?

In my review of They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera on my book blog, I compared the story to Nicola Yoon's The Sun is Also A Star. These books undeniably echo one another in both storytelling style and relevant themes. Silvera's story is bleak, focusing on impending death, while Yoon's story centers on other issues such as immigration laws and cultural differences. Regardless of their disparities, both stories are infused with hope and emphasize how much your life can change in a single day. I would love for Silvera and Yoon to co-author the story of my life. Both exude very honest and human voices in their writing. I believe that they would find what's worth writing about in my life--things I probably wouldn't even think twice about, or maybe things I take for granted or think insignificant.

What do you love about the bookstagram community?

All readers are welcome, regardless of reading preferences, backgrounds, or lifestyles. You don't have to be a professional photographer, librarian, artist, etc. to be able to participate. You can be as active or as passive online as you'd like to suit your level of comfort.

What's one thing you want to tell all your followers?

Thank you. Thank you for following me, liking my photos, and for engaging in lively, hilarious, and thoughtful discussions with me via comments and messages. Thank you for making me feel special!

Any advice for new bookstagrammers?

So long as you are respectful and kind to other Bookstagrammers, you can use your Bookstagram however you'd like--own up to your aspirations and choices. It's okay to want more followers, to rep for multiple businesses, and to be inactive for long periods of time. You do not owe anyone any explanations, unless you've made some significant commitments with others that require your reliability (maybe you have rep qualifications to meet in order to maintain your position). You are not bound by anyone's expectations of you--experiment, create, innovate.

Your life on and offline is yours, so you do what you need to do to make sure you're okay. If you need to take a social media break, go ahead. If you feel burned out or exhausted, take care of yourself.

But if you'd like for your account to grow and be successful (whatever that may look like to you), you must engage and interact with others. Do not expect to gain hundreds of followers overnight. Visit other accounts, follow users who inspire you, leave genuinely nice comments on photos you actually love and reply with thanks to those who have said something nice to you. Explore hashtags, support accounts you think deserve more exposure, and shout out to those who have supported you. You don't have to be friends with everyone, but don't be afraid to try either.

Be yourself (and don't forget about the books...it's not called Bookstagram for nothing!).
